For the Prairies

Junipers, also known as evergreens, add a great look to any garden design, they offer such beauty throughout the seasons from spring through to winter, some, which give a stunning, fall and winter color. There are many species of junipers that offer you the hardiness for our weird Alberta climate!

Here are some varieties to help you decide on what you would like to put into your garden! We do carry these varieties in our Garden Center and many more!

Juniperus horizontalis - Horizontal juniper/Spreading junipers

Blue Chip

  • Low mounding spreading growth habit with silvery- blue foliage, which turns mauve in the winter.
  • Height .30 m Spread 2 m

Bar Harbor

  • Soft gray summer foliage that turns to a silvery-plum in the winter have a ground hugging effect.
  • Height .30m Spread 2m

Blue Rug

  • This juniper makes a good ground cover with its low spreading, silvery blue foliage that lasts throughout the season.
  • Height 1.5m Spread 2m

Hughes

  • Low growing, graceful growth habit with silvery-blue foliage.
  • Height .40m Spread 2m

Mother Lode

  • Golden yellow form, holds its color all summer long, fall color is yellow-orange tinted with plum for a year round display. Excellent for mass planting.

Prince of Wales

  • Ground hugging growth displays a soft dense carpet appearance. Foliage is a bright green.

Juniperus sabina – Savin juniper

Savin

  • Semi upright, vase shaped form. Dark green foliage.
  • Height 1M Spread 2M

Arcadia

  • Bright green, lacey type of foliage. Very neat, semi-spreading growth habit.

Blue Danube

  • Broad semi-erect spreading branches. Strong blue-green color.
  • Height .60M Spread 2M

Buffalo

  • Wide spreading branches with feathery bright green foliage.
  • Height .40M Spread 2M

Calgary Carpet

  • Selection made from the Arcadia juniper. Displays a much lower, more spreading habit.
  • Height .30M Spread 1.5M

Scandia

  • Compact, low spreading. Bright green feathery foliage.
  • Height .30M Spread 1.5M

Tam

  • Low spreading, tight branches form symmetrical mounds. Blue-green foliage.
  • Height .60M Spread 2M

Juniperus scopulorum – Upright junipers

Cologreen

  • Bright green, broad, close knit growing pyramidal form. Even growing.
  • Height 4M Spread 1.5M

Medora

  • Slow growing narrow columnar form, dense branching. Blue-green foliage.
  • Height 3m Spread 1m

Moonglow

  • Broad pyramidal form. Dense bluish-grey foliage.
  • Height 4m Spread 1.5m

Tollesons Weeping

  • Silvery-blue, string-like foliage. Hangs gracefully on arching branches.
  • Height 3m Spread 1.3m

Wichita Blue

  • A pyramid upright, retaining its shape without trimming. Blue foliage.
  • Height 4m Spread 1.5m

Picea – Spruce

Dwarf Norway Spruce

  • Low growing mound-shaped evergreen, green color.
  • Height 1m Spread 1.5m

White Spruce

  • Native, very hardy spruce with shorter needles than the Colorado Spruce.
  • Height 15m Spread 5m

Colorado Spruce

  • Symmetrical growing full size evergreen. Green to blue-green in color.
  • Height 15m Spread 5m

Columnar Colorado Spruce 'fastigiata'

  • Narrow upright growth habit. Brilliant blue color.
  • Height 3m Spread 1m

Globe Blue Spruce/Montgomery Spruce

  • A dense, low growing globular shrub. Rich blue-green in color. Also available on top grafted standards.
  • Height 2m Spread 1m

Fat Albert

  • Dense form with bright blue color. Accent or specimen.
  • Height 13m Spread 6m

Pinus – Pine

Bristlecone

  • Unique upright pine with bluish-green leaf color. Excellent accent plant. Grows well in poor, dry soils.
  • Height 4m Spread 2m

Swiss stone

  • Slow growing pine, dense conical shape, and soft needles, smooth bark.
  • Height 10m Spread 5m

Lodgepole

  • Native to Alberta, this plant is a tall upright grower. Needles tend to be near the outer parts of branches dense dark green clusters.
  • Height 12m Spread 3m

Ponderosa

  • Yellow green needles and an orange-brown furrowed bark. A three needled pine excellent for mass planting or in park settings.
  • Height 15m Spread 6m

Mugho

  • Hardy evergreen can be kept compact by cutting back two thirds of the new growth before July.
  • Height 3m Spread 2m

Dwarf Mugho

  • Dwarf shrubby growth habit. Dense dark green short needles.
  • Height 1m spread 1.5m

Mops Mugho

  • A true dwarf mugho. Naturally compact plant that does not require candle pruning to maintain shape.
  • Height 1m Spread 1m

Slowmound

  • Dark green, dense mound shaped. Compact enough to plant in any spaces, also known a true dwarf mugho.
  • Height 1m Spread 1m

Thuja occidentalis – Cedar

Brandon

  • Columnar evergreen with a dark rich green foliage. Does well in protected location.
  • Height 4m Spread 1.5m

Danica

  • Dense compact globular. Foliage is rich medium green color.
  • Height .75m Spread .75m

Holmstrup

  • Shortest in the pyramidal cedar, this one has flattened sprays of apple green in color.
  • Height 2m Spread 1m

Little Giant

  • Slow growing, dwarf compact globe. Bright green in colors.
  • Height .50m Spread 1m

Techny

  • Open growing sized pyramidal. Foliage is a dark green, responds well to heavy pruning. Hardiest cedar!
  • Height 4m Spread 1.5m

Wareana

  • A compact conical evergreen, with thickened sprays of green foliage.
  • Height 3m Spread 2m

Globe

  • A dense round cedar with mid-green foliage.
  • Height 2m Spread 2m
