FALL BULBS FOR SPRING BLOOMS

If you want to have a beautiful assortment of color in the spring, fall is the time to prepare with bulbs. Enriching your landscape with vibrant colors of spring is a great prelude to the green tones of summer.

After root development, bulbs need the colder temperatures of fall and winter to lay dormant until the warmth begins in spring.

Planting Tips:
It is best to plant bulbs in a mass planting, laying them in a cluster for each group that you plant or you can also go with a more naturalized look and scatter them throughout the garden digging individual holes for each bulb.

It is highly recommended to prepare the soil to a depth of 10 inches to insure that the bulbs are not heaved out of the ground during periods of frost. You can also treat your soil by adding or mixing in equal parts of peat moss and sand to give it a better drainage.

Plant the bulbs the proper depth required on packages for each type of bulb.

When blooms are spent, deadhead the blooms but don't cut back the foliage until it has turned yellow or shriveled as that is where the plant gets the nutrients to come back for the following year. Mulching and fertilizing also assures the longevity of the bulbs.
