Shelterbelt Plants

On the prairies shelterbelts are both functional and attractive. Tall sturdy trees block strong winds, while creating a border around property and houses. Shrubs trap needed snow and can add texture with color and shape. This welcome vegetation also gives homes to many animals and birds.

Poplar 300-450 cm
Willow 125 - 175 cm
Lilac 90- 125 cm
Caragana 60- 90 cm
Cotoneaster 30- 45 cm
Spruce 200-300 cm

Recommended spacing between rows:

Shrub and Tall Deciduous 3-5 m
Tree to tree 5-10 m
Tree to Spruce 10-15 m
