Shelterbelt Plants

On the prairies shelterbelts are beneficial and attractive. Tall, sturdy trees block strong winds, while creating a border around your property and house. Shrubs trap snow, adding moisture to the soil, and their colour and shape adds texture to your garden. Your shelterbelt will also provide a home to many species of animals and birds.

Willow 125-175 cm
Lilac 90-125 cm
Caragana 60-90 cm
Cotoneaster 30-45 cm
Spruce 200-300 cm

Recommended spacing between rows:

Shrub and tall deciduous 3-5 m
Tree to tree 5-10 m
Tree to spruce 10-15 m
