Siberian Larch
An unusual but beautiful tree!

Siberian Larch, Larix sibirica

The Siberian Larch is a very different kind of tree, it is a deciduous conifer: meaning unlike most evergreen trees, it sheds its needles in the fall. The needles turn from a light green in the spring to a vibrant golden yellow in the fall and then drop off for the winter. The Larch's needles are soft to the touch unlike most evergreens. They are known to adapt to wet, gumbo like soil but grow best in moist, well drained acidic soil. The Siberian Larch has a more uniform appearance, it very dense foliage gives it a more cone shaped form. Mature height of the Siberian Larch is 12m by a spread of 3m. The Larch have, very small cones which start out as a pink color when they are young, then turning brown as they mature. The Larch is a recommended specimen for the Calgary area and is highly recommended for the Grand Prairie area. It is known that the Siberian Larch makes a great windbreak or shelter -belt tree. I feel that it also makes a great focal point in anyone's garden. It looks great if you have some dark foliaged evergreens behind it to help show off its fall color. The Larch is a great tree to put in ones garden!
