Trees That Are Still Standing When the Community Is Finished

Northern Empress Japanese Elm (Ulmus davidiana 'Northern Empress') — hardy, fast-growwing decidous tree prized for its graceful, upright form

A new community is judged for decades, and the trees are the part everyone sees. Streetscapes, showhome yards, parks and boulevards all get planted on a build schedule, and then they have to survive an Alberta winter or two before anyone calls the landscaping done.

Most of that plant material never comes to you directly. Your landscape contractor orders it, installs it, and carries the warranty. We supply a lot of those contractors. If you have a say in where the plants come from, this page is for you.

Grown for Alberta Landscapes

Eagle Lake Nurseries has grown trees, shrubs and perennials near Strathmore since 1970. Everything we field-grow has already been through our winters before it reaches yours, and every tree is structurally pruned in the field so it goes in with a sound shape and needs less correction later. We are a family-owned wholesale nursery with four farm sites and a team that has supplied material for most kinds of development you can name.

Plants That Hold Up on a Streetscape

A starting point, chosen for new communities: hardy, drought-resilient trees that establish well on open sites, and shrubs and perennials that look finished without constant care.

How Developers and Builders Work With Us

  • Sourcing Through a Landscape Contractor

Most developers and builders buy through their landscape contractor, and that is the simplest path. Ask your contractor to source from Eagle Lake, or send us the plant list from your landscape plan and we will confirm what is available and in what sizes.

  • Planning for Larger Plantings

Showhome landscaping and streetscape plantings are ordered by job through your contractor. If a project calls for specimen trees or a large matched planting, tell us early. The earlier we know, the more we can set aside.

Work with us directly

If you would rather deal with us directly, you can open an account. It is free, and it gives you pricing, availability and online ordering.

What Stands Behind the Plants

  • Clean Plants Certified Since 2009

A phytosanitary program that limits the risk of pests and disease travelling with nursery stock. Specifiers ask for it, and it protects the whole community you are planting.

  • Seasonal Pruning in the Field

Every tree is assessed and pruned in its second and third years with us. It goes in with a shape that holds, which means less maintenance for whoever looks after it next.

  • Growing for the Long Term

We take part in the Western Nursery Grower Group tree trials and keep testing varieties that can stand up to the urban Prairies. When a species comes off an approved list, we are already working on what replaces it.

Questions Developers and Builders Ask

Do you install?

No. We grow and supply plant material. Installation is done by your landscape contractor, and most of our developer and builder work comes to us through them.

Can we buy directly instead of through a contractor?

Yes. Open a free account and you can quote and order online. In practice most builders find it easier to leave the ordering with the contractor who is doing the planting.

Do you supply showhome landscaping and streetscape plantings?

Yes, both. They are ordered by job through your contractor. If a showhome needs specimen trees or a matched set, let us know as early as you can.

How far ahead should we plan?

As early as possible, especially for caliper trees. Field-grown trees take years to reach size, so a community planted over several phases is best discussed while the plan is still on paper.

What sizes do you grow?

Caliper trees from 50mm to over 100mm, potted trees in #7, #10 and #15, shrubs in #2 and #5, and perennials in 11cm, 15cm and #2. Sizes and grades follow the Canadian Nursery Stock Standard.

Is there a warranty on the plants?

No warranty on plant material. Plants are inspected at pickup or delivery, and any concern raised within 24 hours is worked through with our sales team. We stand behind what we grow, and the way to protect your warranty exposure is good stock, good handling and good early care.
