But did you know she’s also a Red Seal Journeyman Hairstylist with 23 years experience… cutting hair! Think Edward Scissorhands: “I always had a desire to take care of plants.” But when she made a big change in her trade, she left her scissors and her salon behind.

As Strathmore born and raised, she knew about Eagle Lake Nurseries’ reputation. “I knew nothing about the trade,” she recalls, but Anita Heuver, Owner, saw her true potential and a natural superpower—how she connected and talked to people—something that couldn’t be trained.

Faren confesses how humbling her journey has been. It went from “originally I thought the horticulture industry would be a breeze not needing to know much… that thought was very short lived,” to now attending Olds College in her 3rd year toward a Horticulture Diploma all while being a Mum of two: “Having the awareness of the chemistry, the biology, the cycle each individual plant plays, and that each plant is essential, not just ‘cut and dry’.”

She speaks proudly of taking on the challenge and advises fellow students, “You will never know everything… somebody will always have a different opinion but that will never minimize what you know.” Faren is grateful for the chance she was given and committed to promoting our nursery as the best place to work.
