Get to know Laura

Laura grew up chewing on homegrown carrots in her Mum’s garden in an outdoorsy family that had relatives in the country. That seeded a lifelong connection to nature and the source of our food.

Her professional path began when she recognized that she was drawn to hard work and working with her hands. She didn’t even know that horticulture was a trade!  But a summer job ten years ago changed everything. It led to a Landscape Horticulture program at Olds College and then a series of roles with different growers until she met us, and started in her words, “one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.”

She loves the strong foundation of working together here on the farm: “We are all plant people.” There’s always something new to learn, and always someone ready to teach it.

To the next generation of horticulturists, she offered this sage advice: “Go get dirty… get your hands in the dirt… even if you kill a plant, you’ll grow another one. If you mess up, plants are very forgiving, versatile and adaptive—the plants will teach you.”

She’s inviting the industry to be more open to new ideas, to listen to the next generation that is listening to the plants: “If plants can be so adaptive and forgiving, I think we should be as well.”
